Have Failing Dental Implants?

If you have recently undergone dental implant treatment and are experiencing swelling, pain or infection in the areas surrounding your implants, it is crucial to seek care from our highly skilled and experienced implant dentists. While dental implants are widely recognized as the most preferred solution for tooth replacement and are typically a highly successful treatment, there is still a possibility of encountering complications. One of the leading causes of implant failure is the incorrect positioning and angling of the implants when they are placed. When implants are not properly placed, they not only fail in providing support but also change your bite, resulting in an uneven distribution of pressure. The excessive force exerted on an implant can lead to fractures in the prosthetic, bone deterioration, infection and, ultimately, implant failure. To evaluate your specific condition and, if necessary, remove the implant, you will require the expertise of a proficient dental professional. Our dentists and team specialize in implant dentistry and possess the necessary skills and advanced technology needed to help ensure a successful replacement of your dental implant. If you observe any signs indicating a decline in the health of your dental implants, don’t delay. Call ABQ Dental Implant Center at 505-705-8808 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jacob Rogers or Dr. Ozzie Rodas and learn how we can help.

Causes Of Dental Implant Complications

  • Excessive stress on implant(s)
  • Improper angle and location
  • Unadjusted or misaligned bite
  • Chronic teeth grinding
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Dental trauma
  • Systemic disease

A Solution For Failing Dental Implants

The most common solution for failing dental implants is a total replacement of the implant itself. We will determine this after an evaluation and X-rays. But in most cases where the implant hasn’t responded to either nonsurgical or surgical intervention (peri-implantitis treatment and bone grafts), this is the best option for your health and function.

In general, there are two techniques for removing a failing dental implant from your bone. One is to cut a small portion of bone, sometimes with a piezo-electric device, around the implant edge so it can easily be removed. Another technique is to “reverse torque” the implant out of the bone. In all instances, our goal is to preserve as much of your natural bone as possible for more predictable and lasting implant success in the future.
